Celebrating the Hat Fair

The first weekend of July saw the annual Hat Fair take place across Winchester. If you were in our city this weekend it would have been hard to miss it.  This unique event is the largest busking festival in the whole of the UK and has an international reputation. Performers of all types and styles fill Winchester’s streets with the incredible and sometimes the obscure.

The Hat Fair is a wonderful explosion of creativity and is a great reminder of the joy and blessing that creativity brings. We worship a creative God – one who made the world, who inspires song and poetry and in whose name some of the most beautiful art in the world has been created. As I wandered round the festival and saw so many people performing and enjoying the day I remembered that each of us are also a unique reminder of God’s creativity. Paul wrote in Ephesians:

“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” (Eph 2:10)

Every human being, a living breathing unique work of art.

The Hat Fair brings upwards of 40,000 visitors to our city. We hope they all experienced our hospitality as well as enjoying the weekend. But I wonder whether you might take a moment to remember these people in your prayers. Some come to the city year on year to celebrate the Hat Fair. What might your prayer be for them? How might you want God to bless those who’ve visited. Turn these ideas into some prayers.

The Hat Fair has also been a time when Winchester’s Churches provide hospitality and care and to share something of our faith. Over the years this has seen performances, prayer rooms, free drinks and food as well as Hat Fair styled services.  This year I loved the ‘Incredible Edible Vertical Garden’ created by WinAcc in the Winchester Cathedral gardens.

If your church got involved in the weekend would you let us know what went on? Why not tweet a story @CTWinch or email us web@ctwin.org.uk

Next year the Hat Fair takes place on . How might you and your church get involved next year?
