“GIFT BOX” Human Trafficking Awareness Raising Event

STOP THE TRAFFIK Southampton group are hosting a UN.GIFT box street installation at Winchester Cathedral on 13th & 14th May to raise awareness about Modern Slavery in Hampshire. To help run this event we need about 40 volunteers and we are hoping you will be able to help us with this community event.

What is a UN.GIFT Box?

The GIFT box was a unique project launched by STOP THE TRAFFIK and United Nations Global Initiative to Fight Tra cking (UN.GIFT) during the London 2012 Olympics; and since then GIFT boxes have travelled throughout cities in the UK and Internationally. The GIFT box is a unique way to raise awareness about modern slavery and human tra cking and gather knowledge on the issue. The large walk-in street sculptures invite you inside with promises and o ers, but once inside you are presented with a di erent reality. People have found that the GIFT box is a place to talk about how they themselves have been tra cked, their concerns about suspected victims of tra cking and even conversations that we hope will lead to international tra cking rings being disrupted.

What will be expected of volunteers?

The majority of volunteers will be required to help mind the GIFT box and engage with members of the public whilst the GIFT box is open on Saturday 13th May and Sunday 14th May. We hope to have the GIFT box open between 1000 and 1600 each day, or longer, if the number of volunteers suffice; and to have at least three volunteers on-site per hour. To enable this we ask volunteers to give a minimum 2 hours of their time on either Sat/Sun/Both. A member of STT Southampton will be on-site with volunteers to answer any difficult questions from members of the public.

To equip potential volunteers with some understanding of the issue of trafficking and modern slavery, and also to describe what volunteers would be doing (and saying) we ask you to attend one of 2 90 minute training sessions;-

Winchester, Vineyard Church                   Sunday April 2, 4 – 5.30pm

Southampton, Above Bar Church             Thursday, May 4, 8.00-9.30pm

At the end of the session there will be no obligation to volunteer, but should you decide you could do so, you will be asked to sign up for times you can attend the box as a volunteer.  Please note that any volunteers under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
