The Reverend George Watkinson, curate at Christ Church, is to run the Winchester Half Marathon to raise money for the city’s proposed hospice and has called for other Christians to join his race.
The Winchester Half Marathon takes place on Sunday 23rd September. George said, “Fifteen worshipers from Christ Church have already signed up and I’m praying that runners from more of the city’s thriving church communities will join us to raise funds for the hospice.”
Winchester NHS Trust hopes to open a ten-bed hospice in 2019 by converting Burrell House at the Royal Hampshire County Hospital. While well on the way to its £2.5 million target, events like the Half Marathon provide an excellent opportunity to secure more sponsored support.
Supporters do not need to run to contribute to the project. People can sponsor one of the many runners or simply come and watch. “We’ve moved the time of our worship service that Sunday morning so the whole Christ Church community can be there cheering on all the runners,” says George. “We hope some other churches might do the same, to make it a true Churches Together event.”
