Winchester Churches Nightshelter

Who Are We?

Winchester Churches Nightshelter is an independent local charity that helps, on average, between 120 – 140 people experiencing homelessness every year. We are the only direct access emergency accommodation in Hampshire, and provide our residents with accommodation, food and vital support services, including counselling, budgeting, cookery and nutrition workshops and mental wellbeing sessions. We have 17 beds and open every night of the year. Residents stay until more appropriate accommodation can be found to suit their needs. Our mission is to enable as many people as possible to escape homelessness for good.

How Often Do You Need Me?

Without our invaluable team of volunteers, we simply could not open our doors every night of the year. We’re always looking for more volunteers who can fulfil a wide range of flexible roles for us, to help keep our services running and improve how we deliver them, including:

Evening helpers, and Sunday daytime helpers: Can you make a cup of tea, answer the phone, or simply be an ear to someone whilst they talk? Evening helpers come in from 6pm – 9pm, Sunday helpers come in for a few hours on a Sunday, support our onsite member of staff and carry out a range of small tasks.

Evening cooks: Are you passionate about cooking? Would you like to test your culinary skills on our 17 residents? Our evening cooks come in between 6.30pm – 8.30pm and either prepare a meal onsite using ingredients we supply, or reheat pre-prepared meals. No professional expertise required.

Offsite-cooks: Fancy cooking for us, but can’t make it in? Our off-site cooks prepare a meal at home, and bring it in when convenient. A great way to help us from the comfort of your own kitchen.

Overnight volunteers: Volunteer for us in your sleep! Our overnight volunteers stay in their own private room and act as onsite support to our overnight staff. No specific duties, you just need to be onsite between 9pm and 8am.

Share your professional skills: Are you an accountant, hairdresser, chef or musician? We’re always looking for people with a variety of professional skills who may be able to help us by running workshops, joining our Board of Trustees, or supporting us in other ways.
